Healing Waters - Edithanna Pool

In this painting, Yinggarda Wadjarri artist Sonya Edney paints Edithana Pool, a long permanent water pool that is a part of the Lyons River. It is more or less full of water depending on the time of the year. Edithana is connected to the creation story of the ancestor Burringurrah, who created all the waterways around Mt Augustus.

When Sonya was there recently with a group of fellow country people, she saw the pool alive with bubbles rising to the surface when they approached it. When they threw sand into it as a sign of respect to the ancestors and the spirits that protect the area, the water became still. A wind then rose as a sign that the ancestors had accepted and welcomed the visitors, and would ensure that they would be safe there.
