In this painting, Yinggarda Wadjarri artist Sonya Edney paints her country in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia as spring rains transform the landscape. This region is hot and dry for much of the year and relies on spring and summer rainfall to replenish the countryside and fill the previously dry river bed and creeks, causing a proliferation of different coloured wildflowers to sprout up and spread across the rich red earth. The top part of this painting shows the rain falling over the Gascoyne and dripping from the leaves of the river gums as the Gascoyne River flows right up to its banks. The red earth is covered with wildflowers and it’s as if you can hear the rain dropping onto the water from the leaves.
