A Secondary Eye and FireWorks Gallery are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Gordon Bennett: Trademark. This exhibition will feature the works of Gordon Bennett (1955-2014), one of Australia’s most celebrated and influential artists.
The exhibition title is derived from the recurring use of the ™ logo in Bennett’s work along with © and registered idea symbols. The application is nuanced, ironic and pointed which operates at the heart of Bennett’s conceptual and painterly strategies. His methodology of appropriating, sampling, quoting and re-using found imagery and texts sought to bring about new conversations on ‘accepted’ historical narratives and how they shaped racial constructs and bigotry. Although Bennett’s life was tragically cut short, dying in 2014 at the age of 58, he left an important body of work that has firmly cemented his position as one of Australia’s most important artists.
In putting together this exhibition we give thanks to Leanne Bennett who manages the Estate of Gordon Bennett and Simon Wright, who has written an incredibly insightful essay for the accompanying exhibition catalogue.
