In this painting, Yingarrda artist Sonya Edney paints her country in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia as spring rain transforms the landscape. This region is hot and dry for much of the year, and relies on spring and summer rainfall to replenish the country and fill the river and creeks.
In the artist’s view of her country, spring rains have filled the previously dry river bed and there is a proliferation of different coloured wildflowers sprouting up and spreading across the rich red earth. Across the upper middle part of the painting Sonya depicts the water of the Gascoyne River, which is running and over-flowing its banks. The bands of colour represent the different coloured wildflowers that abound in this area.
