Papunya Tula Artists began in 1971, when a group of Aboriginal men from several language groups were encouraged by Geoffrey Bardon, the Papunya School art teacher, to paint and market their own art. Papunya Tula Artists remains the longest established and also owned art centre in Australia. Artists include Tatali Nangala; Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi; Kenny Williams Tjampitjinpa; Wintjiya Napaltjarri; Kawayi Nampitjinpa; Eileen Napaltjarri; Kawayi Nampitjinpa; Josephine Nangala; Payu Napaltjarri and Bobby West Tjupurrula.
