MILKY WAY I, II & III 2024
The night skies in rural Queensland are
vaulted by the soft, floating, luminous
Milky Way. Its mysterious and miraculous
Presence became the genesis of my own
borrowed creation myth, represented in
this sculpture.
SPRING 2024
With the energy of youth
and unrestrained vigour
Spring heralds its presence
reveling in winters release.

SONGS OF INNOCENCE 2023
This work was originally a carving made from very fine beach wood. The wood was given to me by a close friend and mentor Frank Lambert who was the father of sculpture in Queensland. At the time, I was fond of William Blake (Songs of Innocence and Experience) and John Paul Sartre both of whom were heavy influences. Edith Wharton’s “Age of Innocence” also ran through the work and I was at the cusp of my own Age of Innocence. The work is an exploration of the duality of self.
ROMULUS: RISE AND FALL 2023
Encyclopaedia Britainnica was an invaluable resource for country children looking to be autodidacts. Fascinated by the process of lost wax casting, the 13-year-old Daryl found instructions to replicate the process with plasticine and plaster of Paris. The plaster of Paris casting was then painted to resemble bronze. Romulus was born. Internecine wars and fratricide governed the life of Romulus. In 2023 Romulus finally morphed into bronze, fulfilling his destiny.
