Freddie took an intense interest in the phenomenon that he named tambarella, the Hale-Bop Comet (C/1995 01), which was visible over the clear East Kimberley skies.
It was perhaps the most widely observed comet of the 20 century and one of the brightest seen for many decades. It was visible to the naked eye for a record 18 months. With an orbit time of 2500 years, it will return in the year 4385.
