Dublin born, Sunshine Coast-based Sarah Mitchell, who trained in printmaking and illustration, has completed this first series of paintings for FireWorks Gallery. The collection of thirteen works focuses on the moment Captain Cook and Joseph Banks arrived at Botany Bay and during first trade with the Indigenous people: “I have used this ‘trade’ as a metaphor for Great Britain taking possession of the Great Southern Land Terra Nullius, with neither treaty nor negotiation with the Indigenous habitants. Where possible, I have used the works of James Cook and Joseph Banks to describe these paintings of Endeavour’s voyage from Plymouth to New South Wales.” Since 2010, Mitchell has exhibited her limited edition, hand-coloured lino prints in five solo shows at FireWorks Gallery.
