Travelling stories: A Tribute to Michael Nelson Jagamara

Michael Nelson Jagamara AM (1946-2020) is arguably one of the most significant First Nations artists to successfully bridge 20th and 21st century contemporary artistic histories, traditions and practices. Jagamara commenced painting in the early 1980s in Papunya, Central Australia. A second-wave artist of the internationally renowned Western Desert art movement, he painted stories – taught to him by his grandfather Minjina Jakamarra - focused on the Dreaming mythologies of the Mt Singleton area. These include Kangaroo, Yam, Possum, Bush Turkey, Goanna, Flying Ant, Rainbow Serpent and Rain + Lightning. In 1984 Jagamara won the inaugural National Aboriginal Art Award, (now known as the Telstra Prize). He painted commissions for BMW, Sydney Opera House and Parliament House Australia. In 1993 he received an Order of Australia Medal for services to Aboriginal art.
In 1996 Jagamara made his first of many trips to Brisbane for involvements in new exhibitions, performances, studio workshops and other related events. Travelling Stories focuses on artworks created over the past 20 years, featuring key examples of his experimental work across various media and scale. The works in the exhibition include painting, ink drawings, collaborative artworks and limited editioned prints, sculptures and rugs.
