Rosella Namok: New Moon in the City

Exhibition Opening Friday 9 May 6-8pm

Conversation with the artist 5:30pm

New Moon in the City is a dynamic new body of work by artist Rosella Namok.

Namok grew up in the Aboriginal community of Lockhart River and for the past eleven years has lived just outside of Cairns.

Her latest series of evocative works represent an optimistic and reflective outlook that follows her move from the bush to the city.

This exhibition will provide an overdue opportunity for Brisbane to experience Namok's work firsthand: it is almost seven years since her last solo show in this city.

FireWorks Gallery Director Michael Eather says that "It's a joy to be bringing Namok back to Brisbane - we are both excited about this exhibition of new artworks."

Namok is one of the original and leading members of the internationally recognised Lockhart River Art Gang and has been shown nationally and internationally including London and Berlin since the late nineties.

Her work is held in numerous private and public collections including the Queensland Art Gallery, National Gallery of Australia and the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia Charlottesville (USA).

Alongside artworks including Stinging Rain and the Unchii (or Paperbark Tree) suites of panelled works, the iconic image of a hovering 'full moon' dripping with Namok's signature finger-patterned lines features in this exhibition.

Namok says "I'm happy. The painting Happy Moon is a story about sitting on the back veranda with my family, just being together and laughing. Then there's this beautiful moon, this happy moon, rising in the sky."

Namok's works range in size from 90x100cm to 110x230cm, and prices range from $5500 to $12000.
