FireWorks Gallery will present Malu (Deep Water), a solo exhibition of works by Fiona Omeenyo. Hailing from the Lockhart River in Far North Queensland, Fiona has produced over twenty acrylic-on-canvas works for the show. Whilst FireWorks Gallery has been exhibiting Fiona Omeenyo for three years in various group shows and art fairs, this is the first solo show of her work. All works have been created in 2016, as Fiona has made several trips between Cairns and Lockhart River, and back again. Malu (Deep Water) was Fiona’s concept of focusing on people travelling on the water, both historically around the Lockhart River area, and today, for food and survival. Since 2001, Fiona has explored a distinctive figurative style associated with ancestral figures – this realm of ideas stems from her relationship as a mother of three children. Her technique involves a combination of gestural imagery, amidst lurid layers of heightened colour. Boats, the sun and moon, coastal hues of the water and sky, and the iconic rock formations of the Lockhart River landscape complement her figures. “I moved away from the community two years ago; I am now based in Cairns. I get lonely in the city sometimes, and when I think about home, I think of the beach with the big boulders.”
