Born: 1953 Scotland

Pat Hoffie is a Queensland based visual artist. Trained in painting, her practice includes a range of media including installation, assemblage, digital work and sculpture. She held her first solo exhibition in Brisbane in 1974, and since then has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally.

She has engaged in visual arts residencies across the Asia-Pacific region and in Europe, and has worked collaboratively with artist communities including, and especially, those in the Philippines. She has also worked on a range of projects and exhibitions that include Australia’s changing role in the Asia-Pacific region; Art and Human Rights; the changing nature of Country, land and place; and the effects of globalization on local regional cultural production exhibitions in Australia and overseas.

She has worked full-time on her art practice for the past six years, exhibiting annually and also leading several collaborative initiatives and site-specific projects. She has also worked as an academic, a curator, and as a published writer, and has held positions on a number of leading national boards and committees including the Australia Council for the Arts, Asialink, the National Association of the Visual Arts, the Institute of Modern Art, the Australian Flying Arts School and the Queensland Artworkers Alliance. Pat Hoffie (AM) is Professor Emeritus at Griffith University.

Story/Statement

I WILL TELL YOU ALMOST NOTHING 2022 View I will tell you almost nothing exhibition here

On her return to Australia mid-2020, Pat Hoffie embarked on a series of large oil paintings. These works reflect the chaotic state-of-play in the world since (and before) the evolving impact of the COVID 19 global pandemic. Drawing from epic themes addressed in paintings and literature throughout history, Hoffie used her isolation to try to make sense of a fractured, ruptured world view. Her return to studio painting was motivated by the necessity of seclusion, and by the sense that painting offers a way of silently trying to make some kind of provisional sense of the chaos and confusion of the world around her.

This exhibition gives a glimpse of some of the works undertaken since mid-2020, and a raft of smaller images that continue the focus on the improbable, the impossible, the incomprehensible, and those small glimmers of light in between.

In a world glutted by the visuals of social media, who needs art?
In a world beleaguered by the rolling effects of crises, calamities, a litany of unprecedented events and a plethora of sub-par doomsday prophecies, who has time to spend looking at art?
Let alone attempting to make it.
Well I sure as shit can't answer that question.
But I do know that throughout history, that's what artists have continued to do. Mindlessly driven to respond to the times through which they are living.
I'm among the many who continue to draw sustenance from their efforts. And in this body of work I've paid the odd bit of homage to what a few of them have contributed to my shaky attempts to make provisional sense of the world.

I AM SCARED, I STAND UP
Drawing from the epic subject matter of artists who include Colin McCahon (1919 - 1987) Henry Darger (1892 - 1973) and Paolo Uccello (1397–1475), this work considers the slim margins between catastrophic chaos and everyday indifference.

COUNTDOWN TO MIDNIGHT
Using the saccharine high-key palette of advertising, these works reflect on some of the critical environmental issues of our time.

MOMENTS AFTER A NIGHTMARE
Complementing Countdown to Midnight are an intimate series of oil paintings on paper, depicting mundane scenes of the artist’s life. These works ground the artist’s practice and balance out the vision and intent of an artist working in both the real world and anticipated futures. The artist comments, “These studies reflect my everyday responses to everyday situations”.

365 DAYS OF LABOUR 2007
This work was produced over the course of one year, with a watercolour completed every day. Each page featured an image of someone doing a job that would have been readily identifiable to most people last century. However many of these now appear arcane and elusive to today’s audiences. The works feature labour from across the globe. In some images the distinctions between labour and leisure appear lost, and in others the labour described seems to be ironic or nonsensical.

As well as being a documentation or compendium of various types of work practices, the series was an attempt to regulate a single project on the basis of daily output. Produced in watercolour and pencil, the series resembles a collection of visual references from encyclopaedias from a past era when it was assumed that the productive capacity of the globe could be identified, organised into a provisional taxonomy, and used to categorise people, cultures and their production as a series of quantifiable outputs.
